Difference Between SUV and Crossover

While many people might use the terms "SUV" and "crossover" interchangeably, there is a difference between them. We'll explain what those differences are and how to determine which type of vehicle is right for you.

What Is an SUV?

SUV stands for "sport utility vehicle." Strictly speaking, an SUV has a body-on-frame design, like a truck, and uses either rear- or four-wheel drive. However, today, many automakers use the term SUV to describe any large vehicle with up to three rows of seats and strong towing capabilities.

What Is a Crossover?

Crossovers are the newest, hottest models on the automotive market. A crossover typically has an SUV-like design with a tall ride height, but it drives and handles much more like a regular car-often sharing the same platform as sedans in an automaker's lineup. Since it takes a little bit from both segments, this is how it got the "crossover" name. Oftentimes, crossovers are marketed as compact SUVs.

Hyundai's Crossover/SUV Lineup

So, which Hyundai models are crossovers and SUVs?

·         Kona: The 2019 Kona is the smallest Hyundai crossover and fits in the subcompact crossover segment. It comes well-equipped for urban commutes and outdoor excursions due to its small size and practical design.

·         Tucson: If you want something with more space for passengers and cargo, the 2019 Hyundai Tucson is next in line. The two-row Tucson comes with a large cabin that leaves plenty of room to stretch out, even in the backseat.

·         Santa Fe: Moving up another class is the redesigned 2019 Santa Fe compact SUV. It essentially replaces the previous Santa Fe Sport. This year, it is only available with two rows of seats.

·         Santa Fe XL: The 2019 Santa Fe XL is a three-row crossover. It was previously just called the Santa Fe, but its new "XL" moniker emphasizes how big this model is.

·         Palisade: Coming in 2020 is the Hyundai Palisade. This will be a large three-row SUV and will features many advanced features including active safety features standard on all trim levels. It will be able to tow up to 5,000 pounds, when properly equipped.

Hyundai aims to release many new crossover and SUV models in the coming years to diversify its lineup. If you're looking for a new family vehicle, consider a crossover or an SUV from Linwood Hyundai.
